Celebrating Phil Silva (22 August 1940 – 12 June 2025)
Saturday 30th August 2025

It is with deep sadness that we share the news of Dr. Phil Silva's passing.
Phil’s incredible drive and energy helped create and mould the Dunedin Study in the face of almost impossible odds. Now, after a long retirement, he has passed away on the 12th of June 2025, with his family around him.
Phil had a career that was very different to many in academia – he began his working life as a Primary school teacher from 1961 to 1966, teaching children of all levels in both town and country settings. The skills learned while working with young children become invaluable as Phil embarked on a mighty task and launched what is now known as The Dunedin Study. Phil's legacy is large, and we will continue to work to uphold the taonga that Phil leaves behind.
